Politics and Religion: God Doesn’t Live in the White House

March 7, 2017

A pastor took his daughter to see the President when POTUS  came to his hometown. What he saw and heard was a religious experience that had nothing to do with God and involved very little religion or spirituality. He noted that the crowd prayed the Lord’s Prayer as if it was a chant at a sports event and sang “God Bless America” as if they were singing about The Father, the Son,  and the Holy Ghost,  not a nation. When a minister was asked to pray,  he kept interjecting, “Thank you God for making this the greatest country on earth.”

Hitler, a Roman Catholic as a child, decreed a state religion that was not based on Christianity. “Religion played a role in Nazi Germany but as with so many other aspects of life in the state, religion became the ‘property’ of the government with the introduction of the Reich Church. While Hitler had been brought up as a Roman Catholic, he rejected Christian beliefs as an adult.”

According to the Bible,  the very elect will be deceived by a false prophet. Yet despite, no visible connection to God or confessing belief in the death and resurrection of Jesus to pay for our sins, a lot of Christians believe that President Trump was ordained by God to rule our country. Rev. Joel Tooley, the pastor that took his daughter to see the President doesn’t think so.

“’People were being ushered into a deeply religious experience,” Tooley wrote, ‘and it made me completely uncomfortable. However, during a rendition of God Bless the USA, some attendees began to sing along and raise their hands in an almost religious way....“I can’t explain it, but I felt sick. This [by preacher previously mention] wasn’t a prayer beseeching the presence of Almighty God, it felt theatrical and manipulative....” Joel Tooley’s Facebook page.

Rev. Tooley goes on to describe the hatred and evil directed at protestors holding up signs or chanting with both verbal and physical threats on violation of the First Amendment which ensures free speech and freedom of assembly.

“My daughter was shaking in fear as she clung to me. The one man behind the protesters shoved himself forward, grabbed the lady by the arm and screamed with multiple expletives, ‘I’m going to take you out! This is my president and nobody has the right to disrespect him and nobody has the right to keep me from hearing him!’ I wish I could have captured the expressions of that man on camera. I will never forget him....

“That’s when another lady screamed in my face that what I was doing was un-American. I just chuckled and responded, ‘What I am doing is completely American – I’m standing up for people who are being bullied – it doesn’t matter if I agree with them or not. You came here to see the President, now ignore these ladies, turn around and enjoy the show.’ Without explanation, they calmed down and turned around to hear what Trump had to say.’”

The only thing Godly in the above scenario is how the pastor dealt with the venom and hate directed at him when he tried to intervened due to the mean-spirited remarks and physical threats to safety of protesters well within their rights to criticize the President. Yet, many of the people that voted for and still believe in Donald Trump claim to be followers of Christ.

Why do some Christians believe that Trump was sent by God to lead our country despite his often immoral statements and actions?  Why do people believe he’s going to create jobs when he has a record of not paying contractors who’ve built his massive buildings, leaving works without paychecks?

How could televangelist Jim Bakker call Donald Trump the Messiah or his forerunner? Maybe they assume that his ideology is Christisn just because he is a Republican, as if there are no Democratic President that are Christian. Jimmy Carter was and is a Christian.

However, as Christians our belief should be in God, not man.  Although there was not the level of vitriol during the Obama campaign and subsequent Presidency that plagues Trump, I was uncomfortable with some of the chanting and seeming hypnosis in the crowds that came out to support our former President.

No leader or love for a leader should be equated with God. Our salvation comes from Jesus Christ, not a President. Let us not lose sight of who we worship and not be deceived. Or we could very well end up like Nazi Germany. Pray for our President and ask God to guide him, but don’t assume that God has sent us a Savior in the Oval Office. Our Savior was born in a manger, not in a mansion.  His father was a carpenter,  not a millionnaire.

No President has the authority that God has and when we elevate a man (or woman) to the place that belongs to God in our lives,  we have created an idol that Satan will use to deceive us.  Pray for our President, but don’t worship him. Ask God to guide him to do what’s right and to lead our country In the right direction and keep it safe.

Christians, stop worshipping idols and remember who created you and who will sustain you in your time of need. When you pray, call on the name of Jesus to bless our country and its leaders. That’s our job as Christian citizens.  Beware of false prophets and making idols of men. “Trust in the Lord and in all your ways acknowledge him.”
