Trinity Faith Tabernacle Reaches Back and Celebrates Its History!

March 12, 2019

By Dr. Marjory Goodloe

Submission to Interfaith Gazette

Trinity Faith Tabernacle Deliverance Center, which was established on February 27, 1964, has a rich history of love, faith, and obedience. Rev. Edward A. King, better known as Dad King, started Trinity Faith Tabernacle out of obedience to the Lord. He was a God-fearing man, full of wisdom, love, and faith.  And after his passing, Evangelist Mary Francis Jones (Mother Jones) was appointed the Pastor of Trinity.

Mother Jones was known as a faithful and loving Pastor. She was committed to honoring the legacy of Dad King and teaching the word of God. As such, she started the Trinity Faith Tabernacle Bible School.

And after the passing of Mother Jones, Evangelist Helen L. Brown was appointed Pastor. Dr. Brown was known for her love for hurting souls. She established the Trinity Faith Tabernacle Outreach Program where clothing and food items were provided to those in need. Dr. Brown also established the Rahab, a house for hurting women. After the death of Dr. Brown, her daughter, Pastor Patricia Smith, assumed the Pastorate. Pastor Smith is committed to preaching the word of God and connecting the youth of Trinity to its rich history of love, faith, and obedience.  In 2014, Pastor Smith began hosting bi-annual Old Landmark Services to bring former members, visitors, and friends together to celebrate Trinity’s heritage.

On Sunday February 24th, Pastor Smith and Trinity Faith Tabernacle did just that. Former members who have distinguished themselves in the community as well as in their careers, were honored.  Those who were honored in this service was Minister Bill Harris, the singing group Chosen, and Pastor Roscoe Gilmore.  This year’s recipients were selected based on their commitment to love, faith, and obedience.

Pastor Roscoe Gilmore served as the Assistant Pastor to Dad King and now serves as the senior Pastor of Lighthouse Holiness Tabernacle. Minster Bill Harris served as the Assistant Youth Leader under the leadership of Dr. Helen L. Brown and was the First African American News Anchor in Toledo, Ohio. The singing group Chosen, was known throughout Toledo and Ohio for their amazing vocals.

The Service included the Trinity Faith Tabernacle Youth Choir who sang Negro spirituals, followed by a dynamic praise dance from the junior Praise Dancers.  Bishop LeRoy Coleman brought forth a powerful message entitled “The Un-invited Guest”. Throughout his message he sprinkled fond memories of Dad King, Mother Jones, and Dr. Brown.  The audience laughed hysterically as Bishop Coleman expressed his sentiments of growing up with Minister Bill Harris. According to Bishop Coleman, Minister Bill Harris convinced him and others that they were great singers, only to later find out that the women of Chosen sang much better than them.

Chosen and Pastor Gilmore were unable to attend the service. However, Minister Bill Harris and spouse Dr. Barbara, and other supporters were present to celebrate Minister Harris’s accomplishments.  Following the presentations of awards, Minister Bill Harris provided greetings, encouraging attendees to live for God whole-heartedly.  During his time at Trinity, he faithfully served under Dad King, Mother Jones, and Dr. Brown. Today he excels as a financial planner. He also spent over 22 years in Television, having been an Assistant News Director, Reporter, and Public Affairs Director for TV 13.  He also served as Public Information Officer for the City of Toledo, Vice president of the Financial Planning Association of Northwest Ohio, a Board Member of the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Program Committee Chairman of the Chamber Small Business Association.

Pastor Smith and Trinity Faith Tabernacle are honored to have such a strong, rich history of black excellence. In November, Trinity will continue to honor its great heritage by honoring Pastor Patricia Smith in her Tenth Pastoral Anniversary.
