Grace Community Center Celebrates 50 Years!

On Saturday, October 19th, Grace Community Center celebrated 50 years since its founding in 1969. The celebration banquet took place at First Church of God on Collingwood.

“We intend to serve the needs of our neighbors and restore a sense of community where it’s lacking,” stated Bryce Harbaugh, Chair of Grace Board of Directors.

Keynote speaker, native Toledoan Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, spoke of the great accomplishments of the City of Toledo and how through the work people of faith, hope rests eternal. Congresswoman Kaptur presented Grace Community Center with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for outstanding and invaluable service to the community. She congratulated all the honorees for 50 years of loving and helping this community saying, “No one ever achieves anything alone.”

The Grace staff was honored for their work and their unwavering commitment to the center over the years. Honorees included Founding Director Betty Amison along with Elaine Page, Jay Shavers, Kathy Placzkiewicz, Mattie McAlister and Bryce Harbaugh.

Councilman Larry Sykes presented Grace with the Office of the City Council Resolution in celebration of 50 years of service to this community. Individual Resolutions were presented to Betty Amison for 43 years of service and Elaine Page for 8 years of service. He remarked about the incredible commitment from Amison and the Grace staff in efforts to make our children great.

Former Toledo Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson who currently serves and State Representative in the Ohio House of Representatives, District 44, was in attendance to celebrate the great accomplishments of Grace Center. Grace was presented with a Proclamation on behalf of herself and the Speaker of the House. “Continue to do well and know that we are here with you,” said Hicks-Hudson.

Upon its 50th Celebration, Grace Community Center was also presented with a Proclamation from City of Toledo, Office of the Mayor. Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz recognized the center for the importance of its contributions and impact in the City of Toledo.

Grace Community Center is committed to community improvement. Their mission is to encourage the personal development of self-actualization through programs and services. They are dedicated to preserving the neighborhood.

Grace is family-focused. The center prides themselves on offering programs and services designed to strengthen families. These include educational, leadership, social development, recreational, after school programs, a community garden as well as health and wellness programs for both youth and seniors.
